During the ancient times, parents have performed a lot of diverse methods in carrying their babies. It has been a common sight to see the Eastern population to carry their children using wraps and slings over their bodies for many years. This craze has reached the West side of the globe and has tremendously caught the whole world with its popularity. These days, parents from all parts of the world have been avid followers of the wide range of baby carriers.

Customarily, the baby sling has been a version adapted from the ancient way of carrying and transporting children. Chinese culture has depicted the use of the baby sling that is called Mei Tai which is made of a fabric that is shaped in squares with corner straps. Its design is meant to be wrapped around the parent and the baby. The straps on the four corners are being used to fold it all together and secure it further by having it twisted and tucked the straps in, Baby carrier wrap It was only during the early years of 21st century when the use of Mei Tai has been embraced by the Americans as it wasn’t famously followed in the previous years. When manufacturers started to make use of the Mei Tai design pattern, Americans have started to use the baby straps that are tied instead of being folded together.

There is another conventional baby carrier known as Korean Podaegi. The features of Podaegi come in fabric that is shaped in rectangle size with a longer strap. The rectangle part of the fabric is being wrapped around the body of the parent which is padded or quilted most of the time to keep the baby warm. Then, the straps are being fastened around the baby’s bottom and tied on the parent’s frontal body. After securing all the straps, the baby is then placed at the back similar to how the backpack carriers function. Traditionally, this has been used without pads which made mothers lost interest and decreased its recognition in the West. There are more than a few other versions of the Podaegi that were also used by the Japanese and Chinese families which involve extra pads, headrests and blockers to stop the wind towards the baby.

During the 60s, the fame of baby carrying has taken the West part of the globe took off since then. Baby sling has soon become the most widely used baby carrier which often makes use of square-shaped fabrics and metal rings. The fabric is being draped around the body and passes through the shoulders, the waist and back to the shoulders and secure it properly through the ring. Moreover, tube shaped slings were also made available that works similarly like a sash.

An alternative baby carrier type which is also popular is the baby wrap. This basically makes use of longer pieces of fabric about more than seven yards. The same method is being used as the fabric pieces are being wrapped around the shoulders and waist to secure the baby to the mother. There are a lot of different ways on these can be tied but it will depend on the fabric length as it can limit parents in wrapping the fabric around their bodies. The fabric material being used in baby wraps are normally stretch fabrics to promote easier wrapping of the baby regardless of his/her size.

Today, baby backpacks have also had its fair share of popularity in the West side. The tradition has been practiced by the Inuit mothers of Alaska on how they carry their own babies. Wide array of baby backpacks are now made available in shops and even on the Internet. Generally, they use soft but durable type of material to build a firm frame which can be worn in front, on the hip or back of the parent. The only difference will be seen on the slings as the backpack carrier typically depends on clips and buckles and clips while other models still make use of tensions and knots.
